Former U.S. vice president Dick Cheney has died. Cheney was one of the primary architects of the disastrous imperialist U.S. invasion and war on Iraq (2003–2011). His role in orchestrating this war was personal, intended to enrich himself and Halliburton, the oil corporation that he led as CEO until he was tapped to become the running mate of George W. Bush in the 2000 election. This predatory war was achieved with egregious lies. Cheney himself went on TV to falsely accuse Iraq of developing nuclear weapons, now proven to be a complete and knowing fabrication.
The war on Iraq is estimate to have killed at least one million people, mostly Iraqi, and displaced many millions throughout West Asia, plunging the region into a state of turmoil that continues to this day. Cheney’s efforts to suppress both the heroic Iraqi resistance and the anti-war discontent at home resulted in the creation of not-so-secret torture prisons and a vast mass surveillance apparatus, which are now in the hands of the neo-Nazi aspiring dictator Donald Trump.
To cap off this disgraceful legacy, in September 2024, Dick Cheney endorsed the campaign of the pro-genocide imperialist Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, while his daughter Liz Cheney actively campaigned with her, in a failed attempt to unite the pro-imperialist status quo to prevent Trump from returning to power.
Class conscious workers of the world should unapologetically stand with Dick Cheney’s victims of all countries in heaping pure scorn on his memory. No tears for Dick Cheney!
